Phillies Sign Two International Prospects Amid Lockout

Despite the current lockout preventing any major league contracts from being signed, the Phillies have made multiple moves at the minor league level, including signing two international prospects Dariam Gutierrez and Eliecer Bata.

While not much has been revealed about the details surrounding Bata’s deal and player profile, he is a right-handed pitcher from Venezuela and, at seventeen years old, he has plenty of time to progress through the minor leagues.

Gutierrez is the kind of under the radar signing that could pay huge dividends years down the road. With the Phillies signing him for only $20,000, there is almost no risk involved one way or another. Despite being very raw, Gutierrez has a combination of size, speed, and power that could make him a star down the line. If he can learn and cultivate his skills while in the team’s system, this could be a massive steal on the Phillies part and another good move in the Dombrowski era.

Both players have been assigned to the Dominican Summer League Phillies.
