Unlike the Philadelphia Phillies, their AAA affiliate the Lehigh Valley Ironpigs are off to a hot start in 2023. The Pigs started the season 3-0. However, that hot start came to an end tonight as they dropped their first game of the season to the Scranton RailRaiders, an affiliate of the New York Yankees.
The RailRaiders kicked off their scoring with a 3-run homerun by Rodolfo Duran and Oswald Peraza (Yankees #3 prospect) was able to score on a wild pitch. Ironpigs starting pitcher James McCarthur would only last 2 2/3 innings and was given the loss.
A Dustin Peterson RBI single drove in Jim Haley and that would put the Ironpigs on the board. Duran was not done with his great hitting performance; he added his 4th RBI in the 3rd inning and Elijah Dunhan (Yankees #18 prospect) was able to add another RBI single to increase the RailRaiders lead to 6-1.
Jim Haley was the clear offensive MVP for the Ironpigs as he added a solo homerun in the 4th inning that was hit out of the park and into the parking lot. Vimael Machin continued his hot start to 2023 with a sacrifice fly to cut Scranton's lead in half to make it 6-3.
Yunior Marte was optioned down to AAA Monday evening after a disastrous performance for the Phillies against the Yankees. He made his season debut with the IronPigs in the 8th inning. He finished the game with
1 IP, 1 H, 1 K, 0 ER.
Scranton's offensive production should all be created to Duran who added his 5th RBI later in the game ,and put the RailRaiders up 7-3. Weston Wilson attempted to start a late rally for Lehigh Valley with a solo home run in the 8th inning, but that was the final run and hit for the Ironpigs as they fall to Scranton 7-4. This loss gives the IronPigs their first loss of the season and are now 3-1 and Scranton is now 2-3 on the season.
Lehigh Valley and Scranton continue their series Thursday at 6:45pm at Coca Cola Park.
